Maria Mercedes Coroy
María Mercedes Coroy is a Maya Kaqchikel woman born and raised in the town of Santa María de Jesús, on the slopes of Agua on the volcanic range of southern Guatemala.
She began her film career in 2015 with award-winning director Jayro Bustamante, in the leading role of the film Ixcanul. Her talent opened doors in Hollywood in 2017, where she acted with Julianne Moore and Ken Watanabe in the film Bel Canto.
She later took part in the Mexican TV series Malinche and in the 2019 film La Llorona, for which she was awarded several acting awards in international festivals.
Her hard work and impeccable talent have led her to succeed on the big screen in Hollywood with Marvel’s 2022 Wakanda Forever, as Namor the Mariner’s mother. She later took part in Mexican director José Luis Olivares’ film La alberca de los nadies, where her work received accolades as best actress in two festivals.
She has assumed the position of ambassador for indigenous women of Guatemala.
María Mercedes continues enhancing her profession and has taken part in several film projects which will open in 2023-24, and in advertising.
